Emergency Kit & Go Bag

Dear pipsqueaks,

After a quick phone call with le parents, I've been directed to prepare an "Emergency Kit" and a "Go Bag". Not that I believe the world is coming to an end- simply, I believe in being ready for whatever may happen. Be it this 21st of December or whenever. It's always better to be prepared.

It was quite a funny follow-up discussion with le sister. She was trying to coordinate a  meeting point for the family to meet should some disaster strike, and came to the conclusion that we shall meet in our Keelung home. What crossed my mind- obviously something she overlooked- was that I'm in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Should the world collapse, it will be more than a challenge to find them in Taiwan, let alone Keelung house. Then again, I wouldn't be on any schedule in particular, so to spend my life looking for them would be a life well spent in any case.

A gloomy post was never my intent. Simply, I wanted to share this odd experience in the grocery store when I'm shopping for the end of the world. What would I want to eat for 72 hours? Is this healthy cracker? Will this drink cover my nutrients for the meantime? Would I crave for something sweet (thinking of chocolate, of course)? Then, I took a step back and literally laughed at what was actually going through my mind. Really, as if it would matter what kind of food is available then.

But that's exactly it! As I'm preparing now, I can choose as I like. Whatever I want. So why not do it when I can? Imagine all those end-of-the-world grocery store movie scene where everyone is biting off each other's heads for a can of corn. Not happening. I shall be fully equipped in my apartment- assuming if, and that's a BIG IF, the tower does tip over, my floor should be close enough to the base not to be effected. I hope, anyway.

I'm nearly done preparing, but there's always that doubt of forgetting something. So, I thought to check with the experts. Indeed, here's a checklist from the San Francisco Department of Emergency Management of all the things you should AT LEAST have ready. So what are you waiting for? Get packing! Oh, and don't forget to keep tabs on the expiry dates of all the items! It's best to have at least a one-year expiry date, so you can do a full reboot in a year's time.

Just think of it this way: if some disaster should strike, you will be prepared; if it doesn't, you can feast on all the junk food in a year's time before they expire! This reminds me of the time in elementary school when we had to pack an emergency ziplock bag of crackers, juice box and bandaids. I always went for the milk tea, Japanese butter crackers, and a mini Cookie 'n Cream bar. These would all go into big plastic containers divided by class and stored in the mini cargo box near the playground. Though, the mentality was never of the time in need, but rather, when I get to open the ziplock bag again next year to munch up all the snacks. Kids, so oblivious to the world of dangers. Oh well, we can't always be kids. The faster you realize that, the more prepared you will be.

So, get packing!

(Yes, everything will eventually be in a ziplock bag~ zip zip zip, more organized, cleaner, and easier to pack. Still need a few more things but I'm getting there!)
