Singapore "Flying Solo" Tour: Day 2

Can’t remember how many times I’ve woken up in the middle of my sleep cos either someone was packing or someone was showering…I guess that’s the thing with dorms, no one has the same schedule n u kinda just do ur own thing. Luckily, all the girls were showered n in bed by 10:30pm that I didn’t hv to wait to use the bathroom. The room was actually full till this morning when the English lawyer-to-be left for home after her 5-weeks internship here. The other is from Philippines n starting work next week, so pretty chillax at the moment. Both of them are quite nice n talkative, so I don’t think they found me annoyingly loud…or at least I hope they didn’t. the last one, I don’t know how, but I keep missing her. Either she was already passed out by the time I came back or she left before I even got up…so having shared a room for almost 2 days, this person is still a mystery to me lol! Maybe it’s good that we don’t run into each other- she might be the one that doesn’t like me. Hahaha although I’m sure the ratio isn’t that high. 1 out of 4 to dislike me, I think I can do a little better than that, even if they’re girls :P

so yah, I had the room all to myself by the time I got up to catch breakfast before 10am. I like how the main color theme is white…it does have a calming effect, seeing white furniture, white walls, n white doors…that reminds me how much I hate my green carpet at my KL apartment. Ugh…anyways. Having tried to go online more than a bagillion times, I gave up. It was prob a good idea cos apparently there have been cases of asus not being able to use the wifi here…so it wasn’t just my laptop. In any case, I can always stop by a mcD or starbucks to post my stuff later…

So the day begins! Where was I going? Yes, Chijmes. Although I’m not a really religious person, I agree that if it has been suggested as a place to visit, then I should go check it out. Armed with ONE map that had blurry street names, I charged for city hall station. Upon reaching destination, I double-checked twice the exit n not until I was totally sure, I didn’t leave the big map on the public transit wall. For ur info, chijmes n st. Andrews are quite close, within walking distance of one another, but had different exit labeled. Seeing that chijmes was further, I thought to head there first n what do I know…the first thing I saw exiting the station was the cathedral. Ughhhh how did this happen?! I even triple, quadruple checked! O-M-G…never mind, so I decided to check out the cathedral first. It was quite standard…all white n pretty, even a pair of weddingers were taking pics there. Everything was okay except for that one little thing…there was NO clear view of the whole church from ANY angle. It was fenced by a row of tall trees! Now how do u expect ppl to take pics when it’s covered?! Come to think of it, what were the couple taking pics of anyways? The trees? Lol

Like every other time I’ve tried exiting a place, I never get the right door. So once again, I was lost. On the street. With a crappily labeled map. SOMEONE SAVE ME!!! N boom I ran into a Malaysian! Haha she was nice enough to use her gps to point me in the right direction n even took my number just in case she visits KL. I’d definitely treat her for saving my bottoms. So lalala, I eventually found chijmes n guess what? It is now CLOSED to public. Apparently, some event company bought the place n can only be opened/used for their events. So I’m sticking my face to the glass door n telling myself this is not happening…then all of a sudden, a lady came over n asked if she could help. I told her that I came all this way to see the church but it’s closed! It didn’t even mention its closure online…so I’m like #((*!*$_!. U could see her face sulk hearing my story…then she asked, “where r u from?” “Canada” “oh really? Wow, just visiting? “yah…*sulk*” “I’ll tell u what, I’ll check with my manager n see if I can open it just for u to take some photos.” (oh wow~ what is this? Special treatment for being a Canadian? Lol don’t be surprised. For some reason, ppl tend to be nicer if u said u were Canadian- but it’s all good, it’s not like I’m getting away with anything illegal for doing that…but like what they say, ppl are nicer to prettier ppl. It’s an ugly truth; accept it! Lol) so I went in, took a few shots, thanked the lady n left. Easy as pie :P – a side note, I think the trick is to smile. So don’t be shy if u want it. Smile like u’ve never smiled before!

Then where did I go? Hm…oh right! Due to an unknown cause, I had the worst stomach pains ever…like I literally had to sit down on the escalator (which by the way is prohibited! Not sure if I broke some Singaporean law, but who cares! I was feeling sick! Sick ppl are always right :P) I thought about coming back to YMCA for a quick break, but it just seemed like I wouldn’t be making the most of my time here. So I sucked it up n went to little India. It was definitely little and definitely India. Majority of the stores sold gold, convenience items, do-it-urself craft store for women’s jewelry…n rice. That was about it. I mean, it wasn’t that I expected to see much, but it was a little too empty for my liking. Regardless, I gave the place a try n looped right back for the MRT to Chinatown. Now come to think of it, I really should hv just called it off. I mean, how Chinatown can it be? Apart from the fact that all the signs were in Chinese…it wasn’t very chinesey at all. If u thought I stood out in llittle India, u’d be surprised at the glares I got in Chinatown. (the whole time I’m thinking to myself, “yes, I know I’m big for an asian.”) but anyways, can’t say it was a complete waste of time cos I managed to find the stomach medicine that apes had brought to bali! Knowing that it works n actually the only brand I recognize on the whole shelf, I didn’t really have to hesitate on this one. Worked like a charm…I was back to my sarcastic self in no time n decided to head back to my area for a bit since it was a little too early for the night safari anyways.

A friend told me that there was a really good popcorn store on Orchard Road (which is like Robson in Vancouver or zhongxiaodonglu in Taipei), so of course I went to look for it. Now, it didn’t look that LONG on the map n surely it couldn’t hv been so hard to look for a popcorn store. But why am I always wrong when it comes to decision time during travels?! For pete sake, give me a LITTLE credit for trying so hard to read the dang map. Arg. But the good thing about knowing I’m always wrong, I just choose the other. LOL~ bingo! I even found POSTCARDS n a POST OFFICE! i do hv to say though, surprisingly, a place as photographic as Singapore, has got some of the most disappointing postcards. I literally had to walk away from 3-4 stalls cos I just couldn’t pick one out that was DECENT. But of course, when ur not looking for something, it shows up. So I did eventually get some n sent the off at the post office. Just to be fair, the post office WASN’T two blocks down…unless ur talking about ridiculously long blocks, then fine. Ur right. UGH~ but not having copied down all the addresses I wanted to send, now I’m stuck with two postcards with no addresses! (having just made the journey of what felt like days coming back to YMCA, the lady tells me there’re no post offices near here except the one I was just at) WHY.DOES.THIS.ALWAYS.HAPPEN.TO.ME?!?! well of course it does: what can go wrong, will go wrong. Expect the unexpected…now I’m just thinking about the walk back to the post office n it gives me shivers!!!! =.=”

On top of it all, I didn’t find the popcorn stand. *doh!* well maybe this is to give me a second chance at finding the invisible store cos I literally combed down the whole street, BOTH sides n I couldn’t find it. What’s worse, I lost the picture of the beer my friend had asked me to buy for him! I know I know, I should remember what it looked like cos I hv photographic memory. Except, it’s not something I’m familiar with. All beer bottles look the same to me! It’s like asking someone who doesn’t eat cake to name the flavours. Arg…think positive!!! At least I mailed most of the postcards I had promised to send. (if u didn’t get one, it’s either I had lost ur address or i wasn’t able to gain access to it as it’s on fb). I should really consider writing them down on paper somewhere…will get on that eventually.

Finally back in my dorm now n just taking a break before heading out again to meet my friend. Lol I really do believe that if u want something, u can make it happen. Effort counts n I’m just very lucky that he’s in town n not too bummed out to hang after training n work. Except, we’re actually gonna be hanging out with his friends too at a place where he had to book a table. I’m gonna be so under-dressed AGAIN! But seriously, I don’t mean to but having my mind set on solo traveling – which meant I could care less about what other ppl think n just wear whatever I’m comfortable crawling around the city in- I didn’t bring anything remotely dressy to wear. So I shall be reminded next time to AT LEAST bring ONE dressy outfit for the random occasion such as this. Time to take a nap! Maybe will do update depending on how the nite goes…ciao for now. Jessy out.
